“I know what it’s like to struggle and not play your best…”

You work hard, try your best, and you’re still not playing the way you want. To make matters worse, you bind your identity up with your ability as a musician. You become hard on yourself and tense up, making performance even more difficult. These feelings of anxiety, nervousness, imposter syndrome, fearing the hard lick, discursive thoughts, catastrophic thoughts, a harsh inner critic - these are things that we all struggle with in some form or fashion. It’s difficult to be a musician and not have at least one of these come up at some point.

I certainly have. And I’ve learned how to work with it, too. I teach from a student centered approach, asking questions, and allowing the student to lead the session. Fundamentally, I think we all hold the answers that we seek. The teacher's role is not to parachute in and drop wisdom down on the student. The teacher simply leads the student to the answers they already know. In lessons, I use meditative techniques and skills from the Lindeman-Sobel-Potts Approach, along with standard brass pedagogy, depending on the needs and interest of the student.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, please reach out to schedule a lesson below. I teach via zoom or in person. Lessons are $75 per hour. I’m happy to teach regular, semi-regular, or one off lessons on any instrument. I look forward to seeing you!
